HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY

The concept of community living in small group homes has become increasingly accepted as an alternative to institutional programs. Small group homes in a normal neighborhood environment allow persons with developmental disabilities to learn daily living skills, use neighborhood services, and enjoy a family atmosphere.

In 1977, people committed to this idea founded the Don Sutton Foundation for Autistic Children. Later, our organization determined to serve the needs of all people with developmental disabilities and changed the name to Sutton Foundation, Inc.
A voluntary board oversees our organization and consists of parents of people with developmental disabilities, professionals in other forms of business and members of the community.

Persons diagnosed with developmental disabilities are eligible for our program. New residents are assessed to determine their current skill levels and to specify objectives in the following areas:

  • Self-help and Daily Living Skills
  • Social Development
  • Cognitive Development
  • Medical needs and physical development

Through funding for specialized services from the Department of Developmental Services, our residents also benefit from one-to-one instruction and intensive behavioral programming from specialized staff.
